Back to Basics

Not only has the nation-clock wound down, its hands have begun to move counter-clockwise. The hour-glass logo is a realistic reminder of how far back we have retrogressed. Simultaneously however, it evokes the shape and voice of the talking-drum, summoning one and all to a dialogue and festival of national renewal.

Chairman’s Speech at the DFPF Party Convention

Comrades-in-arms in the embattled field of the Nigerian nation space, welcome.

You will immediately observe that I do not refer to the space whose passports a number of you carry by the brief name by which it is deceptively known – that is - Nigeria. That is deliberate, and is meant to indicate that we are going straight into business. Some may consider it provocative – I am beyond arguments on such issues, having thrashed them out in numerous lectures, the most recent being on the occasion of the commemoration of the 100th posthumous birthday of the late political sage, Obafemi Awolowo, who had also referred to this place we inhabit as a mere geographical expression.

Welcome to the Democratic Front for a People's Federation

Now that the nation appears to glimpse a semblance of governance will towards a genuine democratic progression, the situation offers an arguably credible arena for political contestants such as the DEMOCRATIC FRONT FOR A PEOPLE'S FEDERATION. We refer specifically, among other signs, to the steps already undertaken to restore integrity to the Independent National Electoral Commission through – among other measures - the removal of its erstwhile, universally discredited chairman, and his replacement by a national figure of unquestioned integrity.

Swift on the heels of this positive development however, looms a move of sinister import, one that alerts the nation yet again to the sad reality that we are engaged on a permanent see-saw motion – one moment reformative zeal, the next political opportunism. We refer to the ongoing efforts by the 'elected' representatives of the people to shut the door on a plurality of political choices through an arbitrary limitation to be placed on political party formation. This dangerous gambit of ideological disenfranchisement requires urgent and massive intervention from civil society on all fronts and all agencies.

The DFPF accepts this challenge, and positions itself robustly along such forces. The UWAIS submission on political reforms, which allows even for independent candidates, has been endorsed by the majority of political parties and the national electorate at large. Public opinion is solidly behind its adoption in entirety. It is a reasoned, meticulously positioned document that cannot be dismissed by any legislature, least of all one that is largely illegally constituted, being beneficiaries of a fraudulent electoral process and an imposed, undemocratic constitution.

The DFPF, associating with others of like minds, announces its resolve to replace the majority of current legislators and political office holders, on all tiers of government, with individuals who are more attuned to the people's genuine democratic yearning and the destination of an equitable society.

Oh - yes we can! Indeed, we SHALL!
